So You Want to Try a Deckbuilder
Roguelike deckbuilders have a brutal onboarding problem. The whole genre is built on knowledge you accumulate across runs, which means your first few attempts feel like flailing in the dark. A lot of people bounce off before it clicks, and that's a shame.
Take Deck of Thieves. My first three runs I lost badly and didn't understand why. Then I stumbled into a combo that let me chain a bunch of cheap cards together, and suddenly the whole design snapped into focus. That 'oh, THAT'S the game' moment is the payoff.
My advice for newcomers: stop trying to win. For your first handful of runs, just experiment. Play weird cards, try to break things, and pay attention to which combinations feel powerful. You're not losing, you're learning the vocabulary.
Once you've got a mental library of what cards do and how they combo, the genre opens up into one of the most replayable things on mobile. But you have to let yourself be bad first. Everyone does.
